Our History

Different starting points, one shared path

When Fondazione UNA ETS was founded

Fondazione UNA was founded in 2015, when the CNCN association, Italy’s main recognised hunting associations and the University of Urbino Carlo Bo first joined forces to promote practical environmental initiatives. The aim was to create an organisation distinct from its founding members, one that could advance shared environmental goals and help foster a responsible approach to ecology, wildlife and rural heritage in Italy.

An evolving journey

Fondazione UNA joined IUCN, the International Union for Conservation of Nature, in October 2020. IUCN is a global organisation committed to finding practical solutions to the world’s most pressing environmental challenges. With more than 1,400 members including states, government agencies, NGOs, and scientific and academic institutions, IUCN offers us a valuable opportunity to build new strategic partnerships and deliver tangible results.

The principles that guide us

Through Fondazione UNA, a new network of alliances is taking shape in Italy, bringing together associations, institutions and individuals that may hold different views, but share common goals. Three core principles provide the foundation for this dialogue:

  1. A commitment to a scientific, nature-based approach grounded in rigorous, objective research.
  2. Respect for rural culture, a willingness to rediscover it, and a commitment to promoting greater awareness of its value.
  3. The belief that nature is not an untouchable ideal, but something to be managed and protected responsibly by people.

These three principles unite us and open the door to new forms of collaboration.

Think what a great revolution it would be if millions of young people all over the world, with their backpacks on, started heading out into nature.
