The law states that “wildlife is part of the State’s inalienable heritage and is protected in the interest of the national and international community”.

At international level, the main legal references are Directive 79/409/EEC on the conservation of wild birds and the Bern Convention on the conservation of wildlife and natural habitats.

In practice, non-huntable animals are all those that do not appear in the regional hunting calendars issued each year by Italy’s Regions.

Each Region may independently set the opening and closing dates of the hunting season, the species that may be hunted, the permitted hunting methods and the harvest limits for each species.

However, all Regions must comply with general principles designed to ensure that hunting remains sustainable. The main aim of protection is to allow populations to recover and grow, while countering any risk of extinction.

Animals that cannot be hunted in Italy include several mammals, such as the wolf (Canis lupus), bears, the Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx), the otter (Lutra lutra) and the wildcat (Felis silvestris).

Of the many bird species found in Italy, only just over 30 may be hunted, and only in accordance with the relevant hunting calendars. Its purpose is to control the number and composition of certain wild animal populations, mainly ungulates.

In Italy, the animals that may be hunted through this method are:

wild boar;

roe deer;

red deer;

fallow deer;

mouflon;

chamois.

Some bird species of particular wildlife-management interest may also be hunted in this way in the Alpine area. These include the black grouse, the rock ptarmigan and the Alpine rock partridge.

Selective hunting requires rigorous population surveys and carefully prepared harvest plans before any individual animal may be culled. For this reason, any animal not included in the relevant Regional Wildlife Regulation cannot be hunted.

When can you hunt in Italy?

In Italy, the hunting season generally runs from the third Sunday in September to 31 January. Tuesdays and Fridays are mandatory no-hunting days, meaning hunting is never permitted on those days. Through their regional hunting calendars, Regions may also bring forward the opening of the season for certain species or extend the closing date, provided they comply with the general principles laid down by national law.

Not all animals may be hunted at the same time. Specific dates apply to certain species, including:

wild boar, from 1 October to 31 December or from 1 November to 31 January;

hare, from the opening of the season until 8 December.

Regional hunting calendars are also increasingly amended during the season, with early closures being introduced. One example is the starling in Tuscany, where hunting is closed once the maximum permitted harvest quota has been reached and recorded through either digital or paper-based reporting systems. Another factor is the growing number of appeals brought before Regional Administrative Courts, which increasingly make the hunting season less predictable.

[72

post-6766","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news
["GET
